PURIFII vs. HEPA + UVC Competitive Analysis

Aerosols smaller than 3 micron remain in the air the longest, and are too small to be addressed by HEPA filtration alone. 275nm UVC energy is highly effective at killing pathogens of all sizes.

In fact, smaller pathogens receive a higher relative dose. HEPA filters capture living and non-living particles only larger than 3 μm (3000nm). Typical virus sizes are much smaller than this, on the order of 150nm.

Want to Know the Difference?

The ultraviolet portion of the electromagnetic spectrum encompasses wavelengths from 100nm (Vacuum UV) to 400nm (UV-A). GUV, or germicidal UV, refers to the use of UV energy to inactivate viruses, bacteria, mold spores or fungi.

The ultraviolet spectrum is generally separated into four categories: VACUUM UV (100-200NM), UV-C (200NM-280NM), UV-B (280NM-315NM) AND UV-A (315NM-400NM).

UV-C (200nm-280nm) has been shown to be the most effective part of the UV spectrum for disinfection, but longer wavelengths can be used in much larger doses.

Far UV-C is a subset of the UV-C portion of the spectrum from 200nm-225nm.

UV-B can be effective as a germicidal source, but there is a significant photobiological risk associated with this part of the spectrum, so it cannot be used in such a way that humans could be exposed to it.

UV-A and violet light are used to kill bacteria, but they do not inactivate viruses and must be applied in extremely high doses to be effective. In application this means that solutions employing these wavelengths must be used for hours to be effective. These solutions are often used in occupied spaces because they pose a relatively low Photobiological risk.
